In cooperation with Valuepap as structural designer, Austria-based company Cardbox Packaging  has developed an alternative to plastic laminated ice cream cups which are a common part of food packaging industry. This premium sundae pack for Cuckoo ice cream is made of bio-coated cartonboard with a soft touch finish.  It is compostable according to EN 13432 due to the bio-coated materials used.

"As well as the cup, the lid and the paper seal are also made of bio-coated cartonboard, which makes the entire pack fully recyclable and compostable,” said managing director of Cardbox Packaging group, Klaus Hockl. "The coating is based on PLA, which is derived from plants. It breaks down naturally when it is exposed to the environment, and doesn't leave any toxic components."

Cardbox Packaging has won the the WorldStar Packaging Award 2021 in the Food category.

The jury commented: "This could be a real game changer as the pack is made of a bio-coated cartonboard which also has a lovely soft touch feel, not often seen in the ice cream category. It is compostable due to the materials used.“
